Cryptozoology 101

What is Cryptozoology?

Cryptozoology is the study and investigation of animals and creatures whose existence has not been officially proven by science. These creatures known as cryptids, include legends such as Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster and Mothman. Cryptozoologists examine eyewitness accounts, folklore, and evidence in an effort to better understand unexplained sightings and mysteries. For many people, cryptozoology is not just about monsters - it's about curiosity, exploration and searching for answers to the unknown.

What is a cryptid?

A cryptid is a creature or animal that has been reported through folklore, legends or eyewitness accounts, but whose existence has not yet been scientifically confirmed. Cryptids are often connected to mysterious encounters and unexplained phenomena, with stories passed down through generations across many cultures. While some believe cryptids may represent undiscovered animals, others view them as part of mythology, folklore and cultural tradition.

What do cryptozoologists do?

Cryptozoologists investigate reports of unknown or unconfirmed creatures known as cryptids. Their work can include researching eyewitness accounts, studying folklore and historical records, conducting field investigations, analyzing tracks, photographs and video recordings and exploring remote locations connected to sightings.

Can science explain every cryptid sighting?

Science may be able to explain cryptid sightings through misidentification, environmental conditions or hoaxes, but not every report has been fully explained. Some encounters remain mysterious due to limited evidence, conflicting eyewitness accounts or unusual circumstances surrounding the sighting. The ongoing debate between scientific skepticism and the possibility of the unknown is part of what continues to make cryptids such a fascinating subject for researchers and enthusiasts alike.
